My family and I moved to this community several years ago because we wanted a better life. Over the years, I have been proud to watch El Dorado County grow. However, my experience tells me that if we continue to sit back and watch it develop without a balanced plan, we will lose the small town feeling we have worked so hard to create.  I am running for County Supervisor because I know I am uniquely qualified to lead this community, to develop its full potential and to prepare for the future.

Because our county is one of the fastest growing counties in the State, major developments in infrastructure will be necessary to keep pace with the demands of the community.  In order to embrace our growth, without losing our small town communal feel, we need leaders at the county level who will fight for the needs of the community without creating bureaucratic gridlock.

SACRAMENTO BEE ENDORSES RACHEL MICHELIN
Tuesday, May 13, 2008
I am honored to have the endorsement of the Sacramento Bee and I am glad they recognize my committment to open and transparent government. I am excited for the opportunity to bring my energy and fresh perspective to El Dorado County.

Editorial: Knight, Michelin are best for El Dorado County Board of Supervisors
-
Published 12:00 am PDT Tuesday, May 13, 2008
El Dorado County, like much of Northern California, is struggling with a housing slump, anemic sales tax growth, traffic woes and development pressures that threaten a cherished rural lifestyle.

Two county supervisors are stepping down this year because of term limits. A total of ten candidates are vying for those vacant seats – four candidates in District 1 and six in District 2. This election comes at a crucial time. Whoever wins will face a $15 million county budget deficit.

District 1, a geographically compact pocket that sits on the edge of Sacramento County, encompasses portions of the bedroom communities of El Dorado Hills and Cameron Park. Candidates include Bob Dorr, a West Point graduate, retired Air Force officer and former county supervisor; Shiva Frentzen, a businesswoman and owner of an online business directory; John Knight, a member of the El Dorado Hills Fire District board and chairman of the county Planning Commission; and Harry Norris, a member of the El Dorado Irrigation District Board. In this race, Dorr and Knight stand out, with Knight's professional experience giving him the edge.

Knight's experience, formerly in banking and currently as a commercial real estate adviser, gives him unique insight into one of the biggest challenges facing El Dorado County – how to attract businesses, expand job opportunities and build a more robust tax base.

Knight also has an impressive background in public service. He was a volunteer firefighter before joining the El Dorado Hills Fire District board. He serves on the county Planning Commission and is also a longtime volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and the local Red Cross. His long list of endorsements include the two supervisors who are stepping down.

Sprawling District 2 stretches from the Sacramento County line up the Sierra to Twin Bridges and Kirkwood. The six candidates running for office include Ray Nutting, a former supervisor and rancher; Harry Dean, a rancher and heavy equipment operator for the county; Sam Teresi, a retired marketing representative for a heavy equipment firm; George Turnboo, owner of a car repair shop; Babara Smiley, manager for volunteers at the Marshall Medical Center; and Rachel Michelin, executive director of a nonprofit that trains and encourages women to seek elective office.

Michelin stands out in this field. A young mother who worked for two different state legislators, she seems to have a knack for reaching out to people of different backgrounds. Her experience in Sacramento has given her a strong knowledge of how government works. She is the first chairwoman of the El Dorado County Economic Development Advisory Committee and in that capacity worked aggressively to get input from people normally shut out of county government decision-making.

Michelin says she will spend less time in Placerville and hold quarterly meetings and coffees in other parts of the county. She has the potential to bring a fresh viewpoint and energy to the county supervisors' work.

The Metro Chamber PAC represents more than 2,500 member businesses, which employ nearly 190,000 employees across Sacramento Area, including El Dorado County.

“I am happy to have the support of the Metro Chamber PAC,” said Michelin. “I want eliminate the red tape in El Dorado County and reduce the costs of doing business. We must energize local businesses to increase revenue in our area to help solve the fiscal crisis our local government is facing.”

El Dorado Hills Citizen's Alliance Endorses Rachel Michelin for Supervisor!!
Monday, May 05, 2008
I am honored to have the support of citizens in El Dorado Hills....

El Dorado Hills Citizens Alliance
Candidate endorsements
June 2008 election

County Board of Supervisors
District 1: Harry Norris County Board of Supervisors
District 2: Rachel Michelin

The El Dorado Hills Citizens Alliance has chosen Harry Norris and Rachel Michelin as the candidates we believe are best qualified to represent the interests of El Dorado Hills citizens in our local government, the County Board of Supervisors.

Both are themselves citizens of El Dorado Hills. EDH already houses a quarter of the County's population, and our community has become a very busy place in terms of civic activity and local needs. Having Supervisors who live here is important for bringing full insight into our local issues and improving communication between the County and constituents. Because of our size and population, this is vital not only for us but also for the entire County.

The Alliance looked for candidates who are in touch with the grass roots, recognizing our overall population's priorities. We need representatives who can form balanced public policy that works for everyone, giving priority to quality of life as well as to economic needs.

Harry Norris has a long history in our community. As owner of the Union 76 station he has a demonstrated history of conducting a well-run and very customer-conscious business. He served on the County Board of Education for a decade and has been a director of the El Dorado Irrigation District for four years. His specific actions in public office and in his business have demonstrated system-wide insight and exceptionally strong personal ethics, well beyond customarily expected standards.

Rachel Michelin has an exceptionally strong emphasis on public outreach. For her this includes having a strong personal presence in the district, it's not just the current regime of public hearings in Placerville with a 3-minute limit for each speaker. She has a background in public affairs as staff for multiple state legislators and currently is CEO and Executive Director for the California Elected Women's Association for Education and Research. She also chairs the El Dorado County Development Advisory Committee.

JOIN ME TOMORROW NIGHT IN POLLOCK PINES AT A COMMUNITY FORUM ON THE PROPOSED HOMELESS SHELTER…
Thursday, April 24, 2008

WHERE: Pollock Pines Community Center

TOPIC: The Wellness Center/Homeless Shelter

THOUGHTS ON THE PROPOSED HOMELESS SHELTER IN POLLOCK PINES…
Thursday, April 24, 2008
Over the past few months I have had the privilege to spend time in Pollock Pines. Whether I am at a community meeting or in someone’s home the discussion always turns to the proposed homeless shelter.

What bothers me the most about the proposed homeless shelter is that the community was not involved in the beginning stages of the project – it appears as if the county just ignored them. That should not have happened. The residents of Pollock Pines deserve to have their county representatives engage them in the discussion on what is going to happen in their community. Too often I have heard the frustration of people feeling as if the county does things TO them now WITH them and I think that is wrong. We need elected officials who are willing to take the heat and communicate with the people they are elected to represent and we need elected officials who will make communication with their constituents a priority – that is why I am running to represent District Two on the Board of Supervisors.

As an elected official, my commitment is to the people I represent and I will spend time hosting community forums, town hall meetings and other events to make sure the residents know what is going on and I know what their issues are. I will not shy away from meeting with the community because they want to discuss a hot button issue. Instead I will work with the community to make sure their voices are heard.

The issue of homelessness is a big one in our county and one that needs to be addressed, but the county needs to engage all people, especially the residents in Pollock Pines, when discussing how to best serve the needs of those who are facing tough times. As your supervisor I will work with you and I know together we can find workable solutions to these types of problems.

MATHER AIRPORT SUCCESS!! PROTECTING OUR QUALITY OF LIFE...
Wednesday, April 23, 2008
This was just emailed to me from the Sacramento Bee. I applaud Sacramento County for recognizing the impact Mather flights have on the quality of life of people living in El Dorado County.

As your Supervisor, I would continue to identify early on and work on issues such as these and invite community involvement and participation. Congratulations to those people who worked dilligently for years on this issue.

Folsom, Sacramento County settle airport-noise suit

Cargo flights to Mather Airport will be diverted away from Folsom, El Dorado Hills

By David Richie - drichie@sacbee.com
Published 12:17 pm PDT Wednesday, April 23, 2008

Cargo planes flying into Mather Airport will be diverted away from Folsom and El Dorado Hills under a lawsuit settlement announced Wednesday.

The city of Folsom filed the lawsuit against Sacramento County last year to underscore its concern about expansion of Mather cargo flight activities while environmental impacts of a Mather Airport master plan were still being evaluated.

County and Folsom city officials will team up to "develop noise-abatement procedures and examine alternative flight paths" for cargo jets flying low over the city on their approach to Mather, according to terms of the settlement announced by both jurisdictions.

A new consultant will be jointly hired to identify new procedures and alternatives. The consultant also will be tasked with "a review of short-term options to direct aircraft arriving from the south and east to routes that will have less impact on the populated areas of Folsom and El Dorado Hills," according to a news release.

A swath of Folsom neighborhoods have been built under the approach path to Mather Airport. Over the years, a well-organized and passionate group of Folsom residents has agitated against expansion of jet cargo flight activities, arguing that county officials fail to adequately monitor flights occurring now. They complain that many of the flights come in between midnight and 6 a.m.

Those Folsom residents are joined by equally vocal residents of El Dorado Hills.

Is the good news for two upscale suburban communities bad news for residents in other areas of the county? Not so, according to County Executive Terry Schutten, who said, "We support putting into place a process that we hope will lead to a reduction or elimination of aircraft noise over the city of Folsom without shifting the noise to surrounding communities."

Kerry Miller, Folsom's city manager, called the settlement "a proactive way to address the concerns of our community and ultimately alleviate the noise impact of overflights for area residents."

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT MUST BE A PRIORITY FOR THE COUNTY…
Friday, March 14, 2008
I believe economic development is essential to the future success and financial stability of our county that is why for the last year and a half I have served on the County’s Economic Development Advisory Committee. So it makes me wonder why members of the Board of Supervisors would vote to eliminate the position of the economic development director.

Times are tough and I know the Board of Supervisors is faced with many difficult decisions, but by even considering eliminating that position tells me that there are people in the county who do not understand how important economic development is to our county’s future.

When elected, economic development will be a top priority for me – I will work to make sure the attitude is one that is business friendly and provides opportunities for increased sales tax revenue so that programs and services that the citizens of El Dorado County depend on and survive.

I am glad members of the Board realized how important this position is and voted not to eliminate it.

EXCITING NEWS FROM THE MICHELIN FAMILY!!!
Monday, March 10, 2008

The Michelin family will be adding another member to our family. Thanks to all of you who have wished us well - we are very excited. The support of my husband Brett has been a big part in my ability balance work and family, and it is because of our commitment to our children that I decided to run for the Board of Supervisors.  This is not our first child, four years ago we added Ashley to our family and it was the best thing to happen to us.

Brett and I are committed to raising our family in El Dorado County and with an open seat on the Board of Supervisors, I believe now is the time to find a leader who will represent the voters on the board and make sure business is done is an open and transparent manner with the needs of family at the forefront. I want my children to grow up in an El Dorado County that has a bright future.

With a potential fiscal crisis on the horizon we will need to make tough decisions.  Because of my experience and my willingness to look at issues from a different perspective, I know I am the best candidate to make sure the needs of the Second District are represented.

This is our home; we are committed to making the future better for our children and for all of our neighbors in El Dorado County.

MATHER AIRPORT -- A GROWING CONCERN
Friday, February 22, 2008
Here is another answer to one of the questions asked of candidates at the Four Season Candidate’s Forum on January 12th. If you have any questions or comments I would love to hear it. Please call or email me.

a. What is your assessment of the Mather Airport expansion?
b. Having lived near the path of a major airport, I know how disruptive they can be. How would you work to prevent the expansion of Mather?

A) Mather Airport falls under the jurisdiction of Sacramento County. Sacramento County is looking for ways to increase their income and increasing the number of cargo flights into Mather can accomplish this goal. The City of Folsom has been very vocal in their opposition of the expansion and El Dorado County has voiced its concern, but not in a very aggressive manner. Unless Sacramento County officials understand how this expansion will affect the quality of life for people who live in Folsom, El Dorado Hills and Rancho Cordova I don't think they will do anything to hinder the expansion of Mather.

B) During the summer, my daughter makes a game of counting the number of planes that fly over our backyard, so I am personally invested in this issue. There are things we can do to limit the disruption this will have on our quality of life. First, I would have the county be more vocal in our opposition of the airport. I do not think the county leadership has taken seriously how this affects the quality of life for residents of El Dorado Hills. I would use my extensive contacts within the region to form a collaboration of government officials and community leaders to work with the County of Sacramento to find a way to an acceptable solution for those affected by the expansion.

I dealt with a similar issue in Southern California a few years ago when I worked for a State Assembly Member. That issue was turning a former Marine base into an airport or a regional park. I worked with the communities that were against the airport and because of the communities coming together and showing their opposition to the project that marine base became a regional park.

Finally, if need be, I would support taking legal action.

SOLVING TRANSPORTATION PROBLEMS...
Tuesday, February 19, 2008

We have, and will continue to have, traffic safety problems due to building urban population growth on a rural road network configuration. What will you do to address these problems?

This is a tough question to answer because my first response would be we need to make a larger investment in infrastructure, but given the county budget situation that will be difficult to do. First, we need to ask ourselves how we got into this mess. I am a big believer that government has a responsibility to make sure when any new development project is approved that the infrastructure has to go in first, unfortunately in the past, specifically in the 90’s when a number of major projects were approved, that did not happen. That said, what I would do to address this problem is ask the County Transportation Department to submit to the board a list of improvements and rank them in order of importance. I would then hold a series of town hall meetings throughout the district (and would also encourage my colleagues to do the same) asking for public input on what projects we need to address. I would then try to find the funding to make that happen. I would ask our State Representatives for help in securing funding out of the State budget and work with our Confessional Representatives to see if we can secure funding at the Federal level.

CANDIDATE’S QUESTIONS….
Tuesday, February 19, 2008
As the campaign season gears up I have been asked to answer a number of candidate questionnaires on various issues facing the county and District Two. I thought I would start posting them on my blog so that you will know what I stand for and what I will do when elected. I would love your comments. Please feel free to either call me or email me with your thoughts. Together we can make this county even better.

RAISING TAXES SHOULD BE A LAST RESORT...
Thursday, February 14, 2008
Imagine the surprise when I picked up my copy of the Mountain Democrat today and read the headline “Cell phone tax among the ideas to cut county deficit.” I realize headlines sell newspapers, but as I read the story I got more and more disgusted.

See, I was going to blog about an article I read last week about the County entering into rental agreements and paying for office space that was never even used. This has happened twice – once in El Dorado Hills and most recently in South Lake Tahoe. Estimates have the county spending in excess of $50,000 of taxpayer money for space that was never used because, and I quote “a miscommunication among county departments.” What is going on in Placerville?

Now I read that they might eliminate the Bookmobile saving the county $20,000 to $25,000 per year, a fraction of the amount the county wasted in unused and unnecessary office space due to a miscommunication. This really bothers me. This is our taxpayer money that is being misspent.

We are facing tough budget times and we need to come up with creative ways to bridge the gap, but raising taxes is not the answer. I encourage the Board of Supervisors to go through each department with a fine tooth comb – I am sure there are a number of places where cuts can be made that will not affect services the county provides its residents.

I do this on a daily basis as the CEO of a nonprofit. I am always looking for ways to cut costs while not cutting the services we provide. When I took over the organization I was amazed at how much money I saved by renegotiating our workers compensation insurance, our heath care costs and other budget items. There is always ways to save money if you are willing to take the time to look. When I am elected that will be one of the first things I will do. I will bring my experience and skills learned while running a business to the county.

As for raising taxes, when I am elected your Supervisor I will vote “NO” on any tax increase. I hope our current representatives on the board do the same.

RACHEL MICHELIN FOR EL DORADO COUNTY SUPERVISOR -- SPECIAL EVENT IN EL DORADO HILLS
Wednesday, February 13, 2008
Dear Friends,

I wanted to invite you to hear me talk about why I am running for the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors and why you should vote for me. I am participating in “Conversations with the Candidates” hosted by the El Dorado Hills Citizen’s Alliance. We are meeting on Wednesday, February 20th at 7 pm at the El Dorado Hills Library (7455 Silva Valley Parkway). Also joining in the conversation is District One Candidate Harry Norris.

I hope you will take a few minutes to stop by and listen to what I want to do for the county and specifically El Dorado Hills if I am elected.

In the meantime, please feel free to visit my web page at www.rachelmichelin.com. Also, if you would like to speak with me directly please do not hesitate to call me at 916-605-6972 or email me at Rachel@rachelmichelin.com.

I hope to see you on the 20th!

Rachel

RUNNING OUT OF INK...
Tuesday, February 12, 2008

I was reading the Mountain Democrat the other day and there was an article on the front page that bothered me. The headline read “Supes seeing red over ink mistake.” Evidently, the county neglected to renew the contract for additional toner and the county is literally “running out of ink.” What bothered me is how this happened in the first place. Who is in charge of making sure supply contracts are in order and the county has what it needs to run efficiently?

We have much bigger issues to deal with in this county – economic development, transportation, public safety, ect. yet instead of focusing on these important issues the board is dealing with ink toner.

I wonder who is in charge at the county. In my opinion county government is a business  that runs on tax payer money – my money and your money. I think it should run like a business with accountability so that things like this don’t continue to happen.

I am not running for office to worry about making sure there is enough toner at the county, I am running because I want to make sure our roads are improved,  we  feel safe wherever we live in the county and we are all working together to make our quality of life better. Being a supervisor is not easy, but I know with my experience I can bring the skills to county government that are desperately needed to make sure we not only have enough toner, but we are focused on the issues that all of us in the county think are important.

POLLOCK PINES – A LOT TO BE PROUD OF!
Friday, February 08, 2008
My family and I were in Pollock Pines last night at the Pizza Factory. My husband and daughter were there to eat some great pizza and I was there to meet with community leaders and talk about economic development. It was a great meeting with a great group of people, but what struck me is that Pollock Pines is dealing with some of the same issues I hear in other parts of the Second District. They want to feel safe, they want parks and soccer fields, they want to see their community grow economically and in some cases they feel like the county is not listening to them. That’s why I enjoy going out there and meeting with this group – I want to listen to their concerns and what they think are the best solutions and I want to help make that a reality. That is what I will do as your Supervisor. I will work for you, visit your community and do what I can to make the second district and, the county as a whole, a better place to live. I think it is time we have a fresh voice on the board – one that will do things differently and I know I am that person.

On another note – Pollock Pines is now home to TWO California Distinguished Schools – as a community they have a lot to be proud of and I congratulate them on their commitment to their children and a job well done

GREAT COFFEE IN EL DORADO HILLS…
Thursday, January 31, 2008

Today I had the opportunity to meet some great ladies from El Dorado Hills and talk to them about the issues they are concerned about.  The number one issue was Mather Airport and what can be done to change the proposed flight path over El Dorado Hills.  As someone who experiences this personally, I think there is a lot we can do.  As your Supervisor, I will do whatever it takes to protect our quality of life.  Whether it is joining the lawsuit with the City of Folsom, meeting with the powers at be in Sacramento County or helping organize our friends and neighbors to fight this issue, I will do it.

We also talked at length about transportation and development issues in El Dorado Hills.  It was a great discussion and I look forward to having more of these throughout the second district.

If you would like to be added to my e-mail distribution list or would like me to come to your community send me an e-mail at Rachel@rachelmichelin.com and I would be happy to add your name or talk to you and your neighbors.

Tomorrow I am meeting the county and community members from Pollock Pines to see how we can work together to address some of the issues facing that community.  I will write more on that after the meeting.

AN ENDORSEMENT TO BE PROUD OF….
Tuesday, January 29, 2008

Last week I had the wonderful opportunity to have coffee with Betty January.  If you have not met Betty, you should.  Her commitment to the community is so strong that she is a true inspiration.

If you didn’t already know, Betty and her group were behind the opening the El Dorado Hills Library.  When you hear the story of how the library came to be and the work that was put into making it a reality it really inspires you to want to do your part to make our community a little better.  Now that the library is a success, Betty is on to better things and I know that whatever project she takes on will only enhance El Dorado Hills and El Dorado County.

I was truly honored when Betty endorsed me for County Supervisor.  I know her opinion matters to a number of people in the community and I appreciate her vote of confidence.

Hats Off to Supervisor Jack Sweeney
Wednesday, January 23, 2008

I was reading the Mountain Democrat last night about the budget problems the county is facing. It is going to a long budget process as the county deals with the budget deficit facing the State. The current board is going to have some difficult decisions to make once the final numbers are revealed.

I was impressed with Supervisor Jack Sweeney and that he is forgoing his planned trip to Washington DC in order for the county to conserve money. I hope the other members of the board will also consider the budget situation the county is in when they are faced with the same decision.

Because of my experience of running a nonprofit, I know first had how important it is to spend money prudently. As your supervisor, I will work hard to make sure we cut government waste and spend taxpayer money in the most efficient way.

I want to hear from you...
Monday, January 21, 2008
Now that the campaign is in full swing I am having a lot of fun! Since the candidates forum on January 12, 2008 in Four Seasons I have been overwhelmed by the support I have been receiving. It has really validated why I decided to run for the Board of Supervisors. I am doing this for all of the wonderful people who live in District Two and because I think they deserve the best representation on the Board of Supervisors.

District Two is facing a number of issues, as is the entire county, but with fresh leadership and a transparent government I think this county can start to live up to its potential. By working together we can eliminate some of the hurdles people have found when dealing with county government. Over the next few months I hope to have a dialogue with each you. Please feel free to call me or email me – I really do want to hear from you and what your ideas are to make our county better.

El Dorado County is my home and it is the place my husband and have chosen to raise our family – our future is here and I am running because I want to make it the place we all know it can be. I look forward to hearing from you.

First Candidate's Forum of 2008
Saturday, January 12, 2008
Today I had the privilege of joining my fellow candidates at the first candidate’s forum of Election Year 2008. Hats of to the Four Seasons community for hosting the first of what will be many events throughout the district during the next six months. The forum was well attended and I was impressed at the level of interest in who will represent District Two on the Board of Supervisors.

One of the first questions raised was the candidate’s position on cityhood for El Dorado Hills. I support cityhood but only if it is fiscally viable and does not require increased taxes or fees on the residents and businesses of the new city. I believe that the closer we bring government to the people the better they can be represented. It also allows the citizens to have more influence over development decisions that have such a tremendous impact on our daily lives. One of the primary reasons I am running for local government is so I can ensure that our government is responsive to the citizens it serves.

We were asked where we live and what our top five beliefs are. I am a resident of El Dorado Hills. My top belief is first and foremost family – I am running for the Board of Supervisors to make El Dorado County better not just for my family, but for all families. This is where we chose to live and where we all want to have a future. Further, I want to see open government that moves away from business a usual. I want to make sure we live in a safe community and that traffic congestion is addressed. I want to make sure we protect the quality of life we all expect in El Dorado County and finally, I want to be an advocate for the residents of District Two so that your voices are heard when policy decisions are made.

Another question asked regarded the status of realignment of White Rock/Latrobe Roads. I was able to inform the participants that the contract for widening White Rock has been signed and the project is slated to begin in March. This will increase safety and reduce congestion for all those who utilize this busy area. There was also much discussion of the Elk Grove/Rancho Cordova/El Dorado Connector. Though this project is far off, now is the time for El Dorado County to be involved in the planning process and I will utilize my regional contacts to ensure we have a seat at the table.

A few other points I made at the forum are:
• We need to update the county’s web page making it more user friendly. I will make sure the Board of Supervisor meetings are available on the web site and that all residents of El Dorado County have access to meetings and information concerning the county.
• One of the first things I will do is appoint an El Dorado Hills Citizen’s Advisory Committee to give the community of El Dorado Hills a say in the development of our community. I will do this for each of the communities in District Two.
• I want open government so all residents of District Two have an opportunity to be involved. I will hold appointment trainings throughout the district to educate residents on the process of applying for local appointments and make it easier for more citizens to become involved in our community.
• I will be accessible in your community – I don’t expect you to come to Placerville to meet with me. I want to see first hand what your concerns are and I promise to be available to the residents of District Two. I take very seriously that I work for the taxpayers of the county and that my responsibility is to all residents of the district.

Over the next few months there will be more opportunities for you to meet the candidates and ask questions on issues that are important to you. I hope you will take advantage of that. It was a great forum and a great way to start the election year off. I am excited to continue to meet more voters in District Two and share with them why I am running and what I will do when I am elected to serve them.

A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY CAUSE FOR OUR COUNTY!
Monday, December 17, 2007
Last Friday night I had the privilege to attend a great event in El Dorado Hills to support CASA - Court Appointed Special Advocates. Hats off to District Attorney Vern Pierson and his team for putting together a wonderful evening and to all of the people who attended and contributed money to help this very special cause. I was personally touched by the video which premiered at the event and hearing the stories of the children CASA serves in El Dorado County. If you have not had an opportunity to check out the important work they do, please visit their web site at www.casaeldorado.org.

I was proud to see the support of our local elected officials at the event – Supervisors Helen Baumann, Rusty Dupray and Ron Briggs were all in attendance as well as Auditor-Controller Joe Harn. It was also fun to meet new people who came to the event from all over the county all to support this noble cause.

We are very lucky to live in a county where our neighbors and friends are so generous in supporting those in the county who are less fortunate. It was a nice reminder of what the holiday season really means.

What a great community we live in!!
Monday, December 03, 2007
Over the weekend my family and I attended the Christmas Tree lighting at Town Center in El Dorado Hills - what a great event to show what a wonderful community we live in. There were dancers, singers and even Santa and Mrs. Claus. It was great to see all of the families sharing a cookie and a cup of warm apple cider.

We are so fortunate to live in a county that is safe and whose values lie in family and community spirit. I know last weekend across the county there were parades, shows and opportunities for the community to come together and celebrate the holiday season.

While El Dorado County is very diverse we are also very much the same - we want a community that is safe to raise our families in, a place where our children and grandchildren can get a good education and where we all can share community experiences that bring us together. I know that is why so many of us moved here and why so many of us have never left.

I hope over the next few weeks as we celebrate the holiday season, we will be reminded to help those who are less fortunate, we will spend time enjoying our community and we will most of all take the time to enjoy our families.

Campaign Kick off Event
Thursday, November 01, 2007

On Sunday, November 11th from 3-5 pm, I am hosting my campaign kick off event at Sartory Coffee House in El Dorado Hills (3907 Park Drive, #110).  I am looking forward to meeting you and hearing your ideas about how we can make El Dorado County better.  I believe it is very important that all voices are heard when it comes to making public policy in El Dorado County.  I hope you will stop by my first of many district events.  If you can't make it, please feel free to call or e-mail me -- I am very interested in hearing what you have to say.

Town Hall Meeting on Public Safety
Friday, October 26, 2007

I’ve just returned home after attending the Town Hall Meeting on Public Safety in El Dorado Hills which provided a great opportunity for those in attendance to hear issues that are of concern to many in our community.  I was struck by two things: 1) We are very lucky we live in a community where public safety concerns are dominated by the need for traffic control and bike lanes instead of high violent crime rates and street gangs, and 2) That the public deserves this kind of forum to present our leaders with the issues that are of concern to us more often.

As for the first, I believe it is a testament to the men and women who are on the front lines protecting us.  Whether they wear the uniform of a deputy sheriff, fire department, CHP, or the suit of a deputy district attorney, all deserve credit for keeping this community safe.  Public safety is the primary responsibility of local government. It is the job of a County Supervisor to ensure each entity involved in providing public safety services has the resources necessary to accomplish their missions.

The second point I left with is that the public is starved for more opportunities to address our leaders in public.  It is the responsibility of an elected official to search out and provide forums for communication for the people they serve.  That is why as Chair of the El Dorado County Economic Development Committee (EDAC) I insisted that community forums be held throughout the county.  Forums such as tonight and those held by the EDAC offer a clear line of communication that is essential for county government to stay on track with the needs in the community.  When I am elected Supervisor I pledge to hold consistent and regularly scheduled community meetings so I am better able to respond and address issues early instead of waiting to react once they become a problem.

I sincerely appreciate the time each person, both panelists and those in the audience took attend the public safety town hall and look forward to participating in addressing each of the issues raised.

Thank you!
